Process & Ceremony

How does the ceremony proceed?

Relatives meet at the harbor, are welcomed on board, and sail to the burial site. The ceremony takes place there: The urn is committed to the sea, accompanied by music, words, or flowers. The ship's bell tolls four times, the ship circles the site three times. More about the process

How long does a sea burial take?

The entire ceremony takes about 2 to 3 hours. This includes the journey to the burial site (45–60 min.), the ceremony itself (30–45 min.), and the return journey.

Can relatives attend the burial?

Can you put flowers or items in the water?

Yes, flower petals and individual flowers can be placed in the water as a final tribute. Flower wreaths, bouquets, and ribbons are not allowed. All materials must be biodegradable.

Can a sea burial be combined with a church ceremony?
