How does the ceremony proceed?

The entire ceremony takes about 2 to 3 hours. This includes the journey to the burial site (45–60 min.), the ceremony itself (30–45 min.), and the return journey. The exact duration depends on the distance and weather.

Can relatives attend the burial?

Yes, in an accompanied sea burial, relatives and friends sail with the ship to the burial site. Depending on the ship, 10 to 80 people can participate. Alternatively, there is the silent sea burial, where the crew conducts the burial without relatives.

What happens in bad weather?

Safety has top priority. In extreme weather conditions (storm, high seas), the date will be postponed. However, modern ships can sail in moderate weather conditions up to about wind force 5. Light swell is not an obstacle.

What urns are permitted?

Only biodegradable urns that dissolve in water are permitted. Approved materials are sandstone, salts, unglazed clay, cellulose, and bio-composites. Metal, plastic, and lacquered surfaces are prohibited.
