Attending a sea burial is a new experience for many people. Good preparation – both practical and emotional – can help make the day dignified and peaceful.

Practical Preparation

Clothing

  • Warm, weatherproof clothing: Even in summer, it can be significantly cooler at sea than on land. Wind and sea air intensify the feeling of cold.
  • Multiple layers: Layering allows adaptation to changing conditions.
  • Sturdy footwear: Non-slip soles are important on the ship's deck.
  • Hat and scarf: Protection from wind.

Seasickness

Those prone to seasickness should take precautions:

  • Take motion sickness remedies (tablets, gum, patches) in time
  • Light meal before the voyage
  • Looking at the horizon can help
  • If uncertain, consult your doctor beforehand

Personal Items and Rituals

Many relatives want to give the ceremony a personal touch:

  • Flowers and petals: Can be added to the urn in the water. Important: Only use biodegradable materials.
  • Music: The deceased's favorite music can be played. Coordinate with the funeral company.
  • Spoken words: Personal words, poems, or readings are possible.
  • Personal items: Small items can be added but must be biodegradable.

Important: All materials put into the water must be environmentally friendly. Plastic, metal, or treated material is not permitted.

Emotional Preparation

No Physical Grave

Unlike an earth burial, there is no grave to visit after a sea burial. For some people this is liberating, for others it takes getting used to.

The sea chart with GPS coordinates serves as a symbolic place of remembrance. Many relatives later visit the coast or take memorial voyages.

Understanding the Symbolism

The sea burial symbolizes the return to the natural cycle. The sea as final resting place represents vastness, freedom, and eternity. This understanding can help in processing the farewell.

Preparing Children

When children participate in the ceremony:

  • Explain what will happen in an age-appropriate way beforehand
  • Answer questions honestly
  • Children can contribute their own small rituals (e.g., painting a picture to put in the water)
  • For very young children, a caregiver should be present if needed

Special Circumstances

International Deaths

If the death occurred abroad, additional documents and transfers are necessary. Funeral companies with experience in international cases can assist.

No Grave Maintenance Required

One aspect that relieves some relatives: Sea burial eliminates the need for ongoing grave maintenance. There are no cemetery fees, no grave design, and no maintenance obligations.

For others, this can also be a loss – regular visits to a grave are for some an important part of processing grief.
